HIGH SCHOOL FOR COBURG

The community group High School for Coburg (HSC) is seeking the reinstatement of an open entry state secondary for Coburg and the surrounding suburbs.

  • This community recognises the need for and demands a high school:

    • 1500 names on the HSC supporters database.
    • In response to a HSC survey of 265 Coburg residents (representing 556 children) 96% stated that they would use a local high school if it existed
    • Five primary school councils and two high school councils have written letters of support
    • Moreland Council has moved motions of support
    • Kelvin Thomson Federal Member for Wills and Christine Campbell, MP for Pascoe Vale both agree there is a glaring need with Christine Campbell calling for a Year Seven intake
    • Greatest growth in young people in Moreland is in Coburg – 66%

  • Twenty two primary schools and no open entry state high school:

    • Secondary school options are too far away which results in disadvantage and less active transport
    • No clear pathways to high school so friendship groups are split up as children disperse to many far-flung schools
    • Primary schools can't build relationships with high schools
    • Currently the community is being constantly dismantled as residents move away to access education when children approach secondary age
    • The lack of options deters people from moving into the community

  • The family-school connection is the greatest lever for good educational outcomes that benefit all:

o        This cannot happen when a secondary school not local

o        A local school would be community hub - school's hall/library/canteen being available for community functions and the school could use existing community sports facilities etc

o        Easily accessed by public transport – trains, trams and buses

o        A secondary school is a vital piece of social infrastructure and helps in building, maintaining and sustaining communities

  • A local secondary school is essential social infrastructure for the $1 billion Coburg Initiative:

    • Local schools attract and keep families in the area – a HSC survey found currently 53% of locals are considering moving away because there is no local secondary school option
    • Local schools increase liveability and therefore economic investment in the area
    • It is estimated a local secondary school would create 157 jobs and boost the local economy by $24.341 million.

  • ALP policy at Federal, State and Local levels all call for community schools and local neighbourhood education options
